MARVEL, the good ol days and the latest bullshit

So I'm going to open up this posting with something from the past when Marvel was actually cool. I want everybody to give it up for The King of Thessaly (K.o.T) for sending me this clip art from New Warriors Annual #1 (1991). Can't believe I didn't know about this already! As you can see this Rom cameo flash back is making a reference to Rom #24, however the editorial seems to be a bit off there were no spaceknights in that issue it was only Rom himself fighting along with the Champions of Xandar against a Skrull invasion.  Hey K.o.T, was this issue one of your flea market or dirt mall questing finds?

Moving right along, let's talk about the present, which is a not so good time for Rom fans when it comes to Marvel. I told you all a while back when Infinity #1 came out that jonathan hickman would do this. This panel which came from the recent Avengers Infinity #21 (thanks for the heads up Gary Martin Jr.) is some of the table scraps that I told you all hickman would throw to Rom fans to try and keep us on the hook.
This doesn't even make any sense. The character intro at the beginning of the issue shows a head shot of Starshine as the armor was in it's original incarnation (more or less) that we saw in Infinity#1. So why are we seeing the Starshine 2 armor (but with a pony tail) here? I don't have to tell long time Rom readers why that doesn't make any sense. And as you can see Ikon is there too which also makes no sense since they were both on Galador when it was destroyed. Is hickman gonna come up with some "creative writing" or is this just some inconsistency they didn't think anybody would catch? Whatever, hickman you're still a douche so you don't get my money on this one either.

LAST CALL! Look, speaking of douche bags don't be one and let Bill Mantlo's birthday come and go this year with out showing this great man a sense of gratitude in a way that's the next best thing to telling him in person. Even if you live on the East Coast if you can get off your ass and get a card into the mail addressed to me in the next 2 - 3 days that should still leave enough time for it to arrive before I send the whole thing to his brother.

Alright so let's end this posting on a fun note as with the latest video from The King as he shows us his extensive action figure collection along with some other things like published clip art from Marvel and DC that was so disturbing it'll have you saying to yourself "What the Hell were they thinking!?"

Ok so one last thing here. I wrote this posting after midnight when I finally got home from work and this morning I end up finding this innovative fan art. This obviously doesn't fit a narrative of the Rom universe as we know it but then again it isn't supposed to since it's a homage piece to those old mystery and sci-fi novels of the 30s which were largely regarded by the "literary community" as pulp. But then again those are the same sorts who say that about comics and let's not even get into all the art snobs out there who think comic book art is beneath their notice. Remember I was an art major in college (multi-media) so I was around a lot of those assholes for years. Rather you like the concept or not you gotta hand it to the artist (Rob Reis) for having some serious illustration skills.

The emperor's new clothes

Let's open up this posting with a big happy 78th birthday to Sal Buscema! Can't say enough good things about this guy's work other then that it is timeless it would look as impressive in today's comics as it did 20 or 30 years ago as seen here in this clip art from ROM 24 and his ROM/Mars Attacks bonus pin up page from IDW last year. Blasting away with his neutrilizer while simultaneously bitch slapping skrulls and chocking the shit out of Martians now that's just bad ass all the way.

Speaking of artists from Marvel Comics in the 1980s . . . .

When it comes to Steve Dikto's work in the 80s and 90s it's like the Emperor's new clothes. That is to say that no matter how lame the emperor's new clothes are because it's the emperor the people around him will always say he looks great. Now at least I got you all to admit (albeit begrudgingly) that Dikto's run on Rom was far inferior to Buscema's but there's always a bullshit caveat that comes with that admission like "but I'm still glad he worked on the book" or "but I still liked it".

Left click to enlarge
Ya know what I say about that? That's fucken BULLSHIT because if that same art work was attached to any other name other then Steve Dikto and you were taking it at face value none of you would have any problem saying straight up this sucks and we both know it.
But hey, why should I have all the fun here? One of my favorite videos from The King of Thessaly (K.o.T) actually has a review of a Speedball issue (at 6:50 into the video) written and drawn by Steve Dikto. May the Gods of Galador smile upon you bro for this one I miss your vids. Aside from that how can you not love a guy who stores his _____ in a tin adorned with anti-drug super heroes like Cloak & Dagger?

Just a temporary posting

Rom 22 was the first Rom issue I ever had. I wanna say my mom bought it for me at my behest while we were in a Seven 11 store while I was staying with her in Florida so I was about 10 at the time. That issue just blew me away especially with the panel seen above. I had never seen anything like that before in a comic book. I wasn't able to get any issues on monthly basis (who does at that age?) but I was able to get my hands on a few random ones  here and there over the course of the next year and I loved them too.

Rom 4 was the first back issue I was able to get when I finally discovered the first ever comic shop I had ever been to. This was probably when I was around 11 or 12. That comic shop was barely bigger then my living room but at the time it looked enormous to me.

This was another issue that just blew my mind Sal's art was just so dynamic you could practically feel the heat from Rom's battle with Firefall. . . .

You could almost feel the impact of the punches . . .

Eventually I was able to start finding more back issues as I was able to work out getting Rom as it hit the shelves every month this started at around the time the series was in it's early 40s. The art work had undergone some changes but it was still awesome. So at this time I was around 12 or 13 and at that point in my early comic collecting days I was never really concerned with who the writers or artists were or they're back grounds. It's the same as when you're at that age and you watch a movie you're not really focused on the credits especially when it comes to the director or producer you just know if you like the movie or not.

So after having enjoyed Rom for close to 3 years by the time Dikto came on board the art work all of a sudden started to look something like this . . .

. .and this. At that time Steve Dikto, Sal Buscema, Bill Mantlo and Akin & Garvey were really just names to me. I judged their work purely at face value, this is important to keep in mind. It's all about what you find aesthetically pleasing when that electrical impulse travels through your optic nerve and hit's your brain. Much in the same way when you see a nice pair of boobs or a chick with hairy arm pits you don't need Rom's analyzer to determine if you like or don't like that sort of thing you just know the second your eyes see it. At that age comic book art works the same way.

And when it came to Dikto's work on Rom and everything else contemporary that I saw his work in, hated it. If I'm looking at something he did in the 50s or even 60s obviously I'm not going to trash his work any more then I would the art work in Action Comics or Detective Comics #1 because that was the level of art at it's time. So if you liked Dikto's work on Rom or at any other time in the 80s and 90s from some sense of nostalgia that's fine. But I had no such biases about the art I was looking at back then so it was all about what did and did not please my eye. And to my eye, Dikto's work looked dated, clumsy, very "undynamic" and vastly inferior to the artists who's work I was diggin back then which took away a LOT of the joy of reading Rom for me. Yes Bill was still the writer but comics are not books or articles they rely heavily on art to tell a story and if you hate that art it most certainly takes away from the experience of reading that issue.

Folks, I can't explain this in any more basic terms then this. As a former art student and artist myself I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But I also know what people like or dislike more often then you think has more to do with who did the work as opposed to the quality of the work it's self. That's one of the first things you learn as an art student when you study art history. And I'm sorry but I just don't believe anyone who tells me that they would still like Dikto's work from the 80s and 90s if the name Dikto wasn't attached to it. No doubt, had some no name artist been associated with that work no one out there would have any trouble saying it straight up sucks.

Group hug everybody, let's enjoy some good art we can all agree on

So I think it's safe to say we've talked the Dikto controversy to death by now so I'd like to lay the matter to rest and get back to talking about something we all enjoy. I love this splash page from Rom 43. Just take a few seconds to look over the details of the scene. Just as Quasimodo marvels at how Rom's armor is a combination of living cells and circuitry so do we marvel at the combination of Sal Buscema's pencils with Akin & Garvey's inking embellishments.

Doesn't that splash page remind you a lot of this scene from an early issue of the Micronauts? Another great panel with lots of cool details both issues were written by Bill Mantlo but this came a few years before Rom 43. Damn, Karza looks bad ass here like Darkseid, Darth Vader and Doctor Doom all rolled into one. And no one ever rendered him better then Michael Golden although I must say Jackson Guice also did a pretty damn good job too. Hey, take a few seconds to check out who else does a good Karza  Phillips http://dannphillips.deviantart.com/art/Baron-Karza-197054493

Speaking of cool art having to do with all things Rom and The Micronauts I wanna give a shout out to Dann Phillips. It's very rare that any of the artists who's stuff I feature here ever come by and say hi much less actually join in on the conversations. Especially conversations as "lively" as the recent Dikto debate. For those of you out there who are smart enough to not be on farcebook don't worry you can always see Dann's latest work at his deviant art gallery.

And let us all rejoice that indeed there is something new to behold in Dann's gallery that was only uploaded a couple hours before I published this posting! Now there's also another piece of fan art in Dann's gallery which was added fairly recently and it features Black Bolt from the Inhumans fighting a collection of Marvel villains including The Abomination. In it there is something of a Rom related Easter Egg let's see if you can spot it.

For a while now I've had this Sabra & Jack of Hearts team up fan art rolling around in my head. So while my girlfriend was preoccupied with the Superbowl which I didn't give a shit about I started sketching this out. I'd say with inking and coloring the whole thing took around 8 hours from start to finish. I tell ya folks nothing gives you a better sense of appreciation for the pros then when you start something that you conceived from your own imagination and actually finish it.
I especially wanted to do something that featured Jack in the costume he had when he "died" in Avengers #76 (Vol.3). Truth be told I was never a big fan of the original design. Too busy and it looked a bit too much like an actual playing card. It's a shame these two Mantlo co-created characters never got a chance to teamed up, or for us to get to see them battle the Dire Wraiths. Originally I was going to have Sabra blasting off the top part of a Wraith's head with her energy quills but then I remembered one of my favorite wraith kill shots . . .

Here's some fan art that came my way recently. Unfortunately there's not much I can tell you about it other then that the artist's name is Frankie B.Washington and even though Rom's right foot is a bit overly large I over all really like this piece. Rom is drawn really well here in terms of figure composition and body proportions which gives this fan art a very non-amateurish look. Also, you can't help but be intrigued with that giant maw he's facing and is he summoning his analyzer or sending it back into subspace in exchange for his neutralizer? Now it sounds like I'm talking about a Choose Your own Adventure book.

I recently picked up for a couple of bucks a beat up but still readable copy of The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu magazine 27 (1976). It has White Tiger (or El Tigre Blanco if you prefer) story by Bill Mantlo in it. I liked that character from what I've read of him in a couple of Human Fly issues that I have which he guest starred in. Anyways, it looks like Bill had some fun with this story. Aside from what you can clearly see it also says Bill + Karen which is partially hidden in this panel but can clearly be seen in another with this wall. I haven't read this just yet I'm saving it for a road trip to Monterey (CA.) this weekend which is a couple hours south.

I can't think of a good posting title for today

I neglected to mention that the fan art I posted last week as well as what you see above was passed along to me from Gary Martin Jr. so you can all thank him for that. Tell me this cool sketch piece here doesn't remind you of Bill Sienkiewicz's style. Or maybe Berni Wrightson from the early Swamp Thing days? It's by a fellow by the name of Shamus Murphy and after a closer look I think it's an interpretation of the first page of issue 1 in which Rom emerges from the impact point of his arrival.
I suspect this one may have been around for a while now but just largely unknown. This one here has been around in variant versions in black n' white which I've posted here before but it just recently turned up as a color painting it's quite excellent from in terms of use of color and figure composition . . .
 http://www.deviantart.com/art/Rom-Spaceknight-432394852

Did you know that the Starhawk character was co-created by Sal Buscema? Which gives me reason to believe he may have had a lot to do with the character's design which I've always thought was one of the coolest in Marvel since seeing him in a copy of  issue 10 (vol.1) of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe I had back in the day. His entry was penciled by Al Milgrom who also did the cover art for numerous issues of the Rom series.
In spite of all that I've always found Starhawk's origins a bit convoluted apparently like Firestorm he's actually two people. Also, I've never been a big fan of The Guardians of The Galaxy both in regards to the original and the current group (so sue me). Still though, cool character design and great rendering by Milgrom.

P.S. I just started another brutal work schedule like I had last month. It's gonna last the rest of this week and possibly for most of February so I may not have much time for this internet stuff for a little while.

ROBOCOP 2014, dead or alive you're seeing this awesome movie

The first thing I realized shortly after the movie started was that the whole promotional campaign for it was really piss poor. As most of you know I was quite the skeptic. If you are a big fan of the original as I am and you're worried about taking all that nostalgia baggage into this movie don't be. This movie did an amazing job of retelling the Robocop narrative in a completely contemporary setting that deals with hot topic issues today such as media spin, drones, out sourcing, terrorism and even politics both in terms of foreign policy and domestic. But of course it pays homage to the original while showing us how it can be retold in a way that doesn't make it better, just more up to date with the world we are living in today. Beyond that I don't want to say any more about the story for obvious reasons.
I will say this, the movie had much less gore then the original which may or may not be to your liking. The cast as a whole did a fantastic job, I'd say Gary Oldman especially. This movie was also a good example of how when used properly computer generated effects can enhance a film visually instead of making it tedious as did the Star Wars prequels. Again, I can't help stressing enough how this movie is not better or not as good as the original. In a way it's almost an invalid comparison because even though it deals with many of the same issues of course it also deals with many more that weren't in the public conscience back then. Yes, there are some things that the original had going for it that can never truly be topped like Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Bodicker or Ronnie Cox as "Dick" Jones (just to mention a few) and we can't expect . . nor should we that exact chemistry from this movie. But you can expect to go see it and have a great time while still appreciating the original every bit today as you did back then. So for old time's sake I'm going to wrap this up with some of the Robocop stuff I've posted here before.

Admittedly this was one of those cases where the sketch this started as didn't quite end up looking like I had envisioned it once it was inked and colored. Some times you sketch something and it starts to come out well and you assume that as you you get to the inking and coloring stage that it's just going to keep getting better and better. But that's not always the case, it happens once in a while.  But it came out okey enough over all so I decided to post it anyways.

Setting the record straight on Bill Mantlo and Marvel Comics

For those of you Bill Mantlo fans who aren't on farcebook you will no doubt find this comment left by his brother earlier today of interest. Imagine that, people have been disseminating false information about Bill Mantlo and Marvel on the internet.

Moving on to more none sense found on the internet. If the fanatical religious Islamonazi terrorists known as hizbullah knew who Bill Mantlo was I have no doubt they would consider him and infidel who is part of a vast global Jewish conspiracy. No, Bill Mantlo is not Jewish but he did co-create Marvel's premier Israeli superhero Sabra who does happen to be a Jew.
Recently a terror watch dog group discovered a propaganda video by hizbullah claiming that Superman is some sort of subversive means of aiding Jewish dominance over American society. Believe it or not that's not the craziest thing I've ever heard from those screw balls or their leftist anti-Semitic cheerleaders who regard hizbullah as "freedom fighters". Keep in mind that in addition to hating Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, gays, women, America and western civilization as a whole hizbullah (who are shiite muslims) also hate muslims who are of the sunni persuasion. Even when it comes to radical sunni muslims like al-qaeda and jabbat al-nusra who they happen to be fighting against right now in the Hell hole that is syria. Oh well, as they say haters gonna hate.

Cool late 70s Marvel house ad and new bullshit from Marvel to kick off 2014

Oh talk about a cool blast from the past I found this full page house ad in Avengers # 177 which also happens to be a great action packed issue ( November 1978). Here's the TV commercial for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITMYl_oygRU So the deal here is if you send in some sort of proof of purchase from the packaging of a Micronauts Battle Cruiser you can get two free Marvel Comics. This was a good way of getting kids who were into The Micronauts toy line also interested in Marvel Comics assuming they weren't already which had obvious marketing benefits given that Micronauts #1 debuted January of 1979. To no surprise this was the last paragraph that appears in the Bullpen Bulletin page of that very same Avengers issue.

Alright so that was Marvel Comics back then, let's take a look at the here and now which I couldn't be less enthusiastic about.

Left click to enlarge
Well, marvel does it again. Apparently Hybrid makes a brief appearance in the first issue of the New Warriors series. As you can see he and the current Nova are having a skirmish in what appears to be some sort of govt. building in new Mexico. Needless to say we get no explanation about anything here like . . . oh let's say how Hybrid is back after having gotten blasted back to Limbo again a couple years ago in Avengers Academy. Marvel has pretty much made Hybrid into some kind of WWF fall guy now like that no name wrestler who always loses to the popular one every body roots for. We can all thank Gary Martin Jr. for taking another one for the team cuz I sure as fuck don't buy new stuff from marvel any more.

OK THIS ALSO REALLY PISSES ME OFF! I just found out that Bill Mantlo doesn't own any portion of the rights to the current White Tiger character apparently because that character is now a woman. But keep in mind the new White Tiger is actually the daughter of the original and wears pretty much the same costume and mystic amulets. Now also keep in mind that permission to conceive or use this new White Tiger was never obtained by marvel from Michael Mantlo who is Bill's legal guardian. And marvel has been using that character in both print and in it's TV cartoons for at least a couple years now if not longer. Now considering how marvel won't use the name ROM or even have Rom appear in human form you gotta ask yourself what the fuck is going on with those assholes who run marvel comics these days!?

Check out this douche bag when it comes to toy based Marvel comics

In my trolling of cool Rom related stuff over the years I've come across all sorts of stuff including what you see here. It's a portion of a page that's one of several which summerizes the history of The Micronauts toy line written and illustrated by doug chapel. Because the art work was so shitty I never paid much attention to this before while browsing the internet but something recently prompted me to take a closer look only to find that this idiot not only dumps on the Rom spaceknight comic book series, but also that of the Micronauts, Shogun Warriors and The Transformers as well.
In a separate spoof piece focusing on the Rom electronic doll he features the tag line "Based on a comic that basically went no where". I'd say 75 issues, 4 annuals and not too mention the continued use all the way up until today of the Marvel owned characters and concepts that sprung from the series kinda contradicts that moronic statement. Plus, the comic series came from the toy not vice versa hence the phrase toy based comics. I talk plenty on this blog about Rom of course and also about The Micronauts but I've also devoted some blog space in the past to both The Transformers and Shogun Warriors as well since I loved both those toy lines and had many of the issues from their respective series back in the day. In fact, Shogun Warriors #13 was one of the very very first ever comics I ever had which was at least a couple years before I ever discovered Rom. Sure everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you're going to dump on some of my favorite late 70s and 80s comic book sci-fi stuff on social media then get ready for some pay back.

Fan art from a couple of mystery artists

It's been nearly a week since I last posted something that's a first for this blog in a very long time if I was running a business here I'd say it's been a slow week over here. But I do happen to have some cool fan art that Gary Martin Junior found that I've been sitting on for a while now. Unfortunately aside from the signatures I don't know who the artists are. I'm pretty sure you're all seeing that very sinister looking Dire Wraith sketch card for the first time but some of you may recognize the Rom fan art which I believe is from the first Floating World Comics Bill Mantlo benefit art auction. That clever interplay between negative and positive space certainly makes that one of the more unique and creative Rom fan art piece out there.

Update: By coincidence I happened to come across a photo gallery image from Floating World Comics that lists this piece as being done by Aaron Albert even though that's not consistent with the signature seen at the bottom of the art work
http://comicbooks.about.com/od/conventionsandevents/ig/Bill-Mantlo-Tribute-Gallery/Mantlo-Tribute---ROM-Art.htm

Also, speaking of those benefit auctions I just had an after thought about the fan art that was done by an artist who goes by the name Kako. I wonder if his piece was inspired by the cover art (Micheal Golden) for Rom #10? He's got the same style F-16 fighter jets in his art work as seen on the cover.

First up allow me to present the latest custom spaceknight figure from Chris for all of you who aren't on farcebook or deviant art. I tell ya seeing this reminds me of what an awesome experience it was to read Rom annual 2 for the first time with the first appearance of so many new spaceknights, Sal Buscema's pencils, Akin & Garvey's inks, Bill Mantlo's writting and cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz. To see more photos of this latest custom and others from Chris http://custom777.deviantart.com/gallery/

Ya know you can never be too sure when you're gonna all of a sudden be able to just sit down and start putting pencil to paper and get something pretty good cranked out which I was able to finally do again yesterday afternoon on my day of. I guess this resulted between all the new fan art that turned up this past weekend and the nice chill day I had Sunday. This took me about 3 hours or so to do I hope you all like it.

Why are there so many morons on facebook?

It's actually not just facebook, in general I'm getting irritated and burnt out on social media and have come to realize I'm better off having much less of it in my life in case any of you out there haven't noticed that by now. So in closing I'd like to have some mean spirited fun. Let's take a look at some of the biggest schmucks on facebook who are Rom fans. First up . . . .

Actually this "exclusive limited edition" art work has been on the internet for well over a year now
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=706869&GSub=96437  The guy who leaves the "That's great!" comment runs the Bring Back Rom: Spaceknight facebook page he ain't too bright either. I sure would hate to be a Rom fan and have to count on him for all the latest updates in terms of news and fan art that posting is less then 3 weeks old. Next up we have Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum . . .

Both these two rocket scientists get it wrong in this posting just after Christmass last year. This "Rare Rom pin up"is from the last page in Rom #3. Yeah this posting is pretty obnoxious but at this point do I seem like I care? I'm not soliciting for comments in case your're wondering why you can't leave any.

Marvel's latest insult to the ROM legacy

This video comics review was uploaded very early this Thurs. morning after this dude gave me a heads up late Wed. night about the latest spaceknight appearance. It's not until 6 minutes into the video do we get to see what kind of shit marvel pulled on Rom fans this time in Nova #15. Right now it's a toss up between who I have more contempt for between idiots on facebook or the idiots who run marvel comics these days. The tail end of this video has a little something for Michael Golden & Karl Urban (Judge Dredd, Almost Human TV sereis, Dr. McCoy) fans. If you have a comment to make feel free to leave it on the youtube video.

The good ol days of comic shops in the 80s

Berkeley 1988 - 1989
Of all the comic shops I've ever been to the one that stands out as my all time favorite hands down was Comics & Comix on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley California. I discovered it by chance in the mid 80s and ever since whenever I was able to get my father to take me there it was always the high light of that weekend. It's the only comic shop I've ever been too that had two floors. The first floor had all the new comics, books, magazines, toys and lot's of anime models. I still have all my Star Blazers (Space Battle ship Yamato) model ship sets that I bought there. The upstairs had all the back issue boxes including a large number of 3 for $1 comics which was how I got introduced to many Marvel characters and titles like Nova and Kobra (DC). I also got a shit load of Shogun Warriors and Godzilla issues on the cheap from those 3 for $1 racks and I know I was able to get many of the Rom tie-in issues from the back issue boxes. I wanna say at that point I already had the entire Rom run leading up to where the series was at that point. Can't remember when was the last time I went to Comics & Comics before it eventually closed but it was probably shortly after that photo of me (on the right) and my buddy was taken.

Left click to enlarge
I did a Google search for anything about Comics & Comix a couple nights ago and came across this photo. I don't know any of those people but I do know that photo was taken on the first floor because of all the anime models in the back ground like I said they had a ton of those there. Also, I couldn't help but notice that awesome poster on the left hand side. God I love the 80s, Marvel was the shit back then. Now it's just shit.

Back cover stamp for 3 for $1 comics
About a year ago I picked up a copy of Incredible Hulk #256 from a comic shop in Fremont I was checking out. Talk about a blast from the past as I looked it over and discovered these stamp imprints all over the back cover. And they say time travel is just a thing of fiction, I beg to differ.

And now back to the present. This part of the posting is for all you people who think I'm being too mean and too critical of Marvel these days. In the last 13 years marvel can't seem to settle on what spaceknights are supposed to be or look like. We've seen everything from manga styled exo-skeletons to clone trooper look alike type spaceknights and finally the classic style (all too briefly!) just prior to Galador's destruction last year. And with the latest issue of Nova we get these chumps . . .

These are the "Disavowed of Galadoria" (thanks Gary). Or in other words a just a couple of hired goons. Here's a good question, if you were a semi-immortal self sustaining cyborg that can't eat, drink or fuck what the Hell value does money hold for you? Oh how the mighty have fallen both when it comes to the spaceknight order and to Marvel Comics.

Fan art, all the different ways to "mix it up"

Sometimes I like to draw or paint something when I'm in the mood to do some fan art http://csuhsux.deviantart.com/gallery/  And other times I like to pick up some fan art done by other artists and kinda play around with it in photoshop. But I don't do that because I don't like the art work to begin with I do it because I very much do like the art work but find myself sufficiently intrigued by it so that I want to experiment with variant versions of it.
I do this at least a couple times a week as a hobby but you wouldn't know it most of the time I don't bother posting the stuff I come up with. In this case I am with this one which was originally done by artist Jeff Slemons

Slemons has done at least 3 other Rom pieces that I know of and from it all you can see how he really likes to emphasize the interplay between light and shadow values. He's also excellent in the basic principles of good figure composition like with foreshortening, perspective and anatomical proportions giving his work a very professional look.

Gary Martin Jr. "a Rom curator" has been archiving all (both good and bad) the known Rom fan art out there from over the years. I love nothing more then well done fan art but I'm sorry to say what's turned up in the last couple weeks or so would best be described as abysmal. Unfortunately the latest pages from the Rom Remix project falls into that description for me  although pg 4 and 9 are an exception but their from last year.

As with anything meant to benefit Bill Mantlo I really want to be more enthusiastic about this project but the love for it just isn't there. Obviously a big part of that is all the amateurish looking work in it but after having contacted a hand full of the artists last year working on it I was surprised to find out they weren't even Rom or Bill Mantlo fans per se and in a couple of cases hadn't even heard of Rom or Bill until they got involved in the project. That gives me that feeling you get when you pick up an American flag and find the "Made In China" tag on it.

On a more upbeat note Bill Mantlo recently was given the Bill Finger Award. Never heard of that award but apparently it has to do with comic book writers who never got their due recognition during their careers. There might be something to that the owner of my local comic shop didn't know who Bill Mantlo was when I mentioned Bill to him a couple year back, go figure. For more details on the award go to . . .

Although it's cropped, I'm still glad I happened to find this larger format version of this illustration from Strange magazine (from France, the last country in Europe I would ever care to visit) which back in the day (the 80s of course) reprinted a number of stories from the Rom series among other Marvel titles. For years now I've only come across this art on the internet as something not much bigger then a thumbnail preview http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-package-full-of-fan-art-for-bill.html

If you didn't see this earlier it's cause I'm adding a quick update for this posting with this original cover art from some publisher in Spain that reprinted some Rom issues too.

From something about the last country in Europe I would ever want to visit to something about the one country in Europe I wouldn't mind visiting someday. On it's own merits 300: Rise of An Empire is pretty good but as a sequel to the epic 300 it is quite excellent. That was the most recent nerd genre type movie I saw and now I'm looking forward to Captain America: Winter Soldier this weekend I sure hope it doesn't suck.

Cool custom figure and hot cosplay video

Just wanted to thank the anonymous commentator in the last posting for bringing this to my attention. I'm pretty sure I've seen this custom before but this version has a shinier coat of paint and that cool rocket pod effect. But the real reasons I posted this here, one is that there's only a couple days left on the ebay sale for any one who's interested in it and two the seller really went balls out on the display photos (good marketing!). A couple of the photos feature a Terrax figure along side the Rom custom and I love the font that "spaceknight" is written in.

Sorry folks no new fan art worth displaying has turned up in recent days but here's another sort of eye candy worth sharing and this video also has some good laughs.
